wainscotting...bead board...you know what I mean

Hi all, now that we have decided on painted floor for the coastal nest flip, thankyouverymuch, We have another question to post.. You all know about the beautiful and lovely wainscotting, which I adore to no end, well, now what do you think... The photo on the left is of the traditional look that I really see most everywhere. This is about halfway up the wall, with a chair rail moulding. Yes, I do really like it, in fact, I like this photo alot, especially the color of the walls. Kind of a greeny beige. I have this alot all over my "real" home.

Now, the photo to the right, which I think is a horribly decorated mess (sorry, decorator) I really dislike the color that they chose for the wainscotting first of all, second, what a mish mash of funny items, look at that teeny tiny sconce up by those canoe paddles--uh, no... Anyway, this is not my point to point out decoration faux paux..What I want to point out to you is the shape of this room, the vaulted cieling (just like the nest) and the doorway (just like the nest) I am voting for this -all the way up wainscotting look. I am also trying to talk my BobVilla into installing a very large piece of vintage wood moulding all the way around the top of the wainscotting and leaving the rest (yellow part in photo) just drywall (painted and textured, of course) These walls would all be the same color. Beadboard, moulding and top of said wall. To get the full flow and height I think it must be.

So, this is the new question I post to all of you gals out there.. De lurk and give me your opinion, Id love to hear it. If you want, you can even put a little dig into this horribly decorated mess, above. I must tell you, they both came from the cottage living website. You know, it would be so fun to get the coastal nest into that magazine, or coastal living. hmmmm. interesting thought, eh?A Start to finish type article. Maybe I should start bombarding them with my boring posts. nawwww. Anyway, let the comments fly. I hope you all have a great Friday, I am going to TRY and put all my clean laundry away today, again I said try..BV had trouble finding dress socks today and was a little irritated that it wasnt done (dont taze me, bro!!) like hes the boss...

Love to all,
Lisa

I like the style of the first picture and not just because the 2nd pic is so horrible.

Have you ever thought of splitting the difference? I think the "all the way up" looks nice, but the effect is kind of lost. The first one is nice, but like you said you see it everywhere. We plan in install ours abuot 3/4 of the way up the wall. I've seen it installed this way and I really like it. :0)

I agree with Laurie Anne that the effect is lost with the wainscoting all the way up, and I'm pretty sure I'm not just tainted by the trashy cabin chic décor (but seriously--WHY?). If the room is narrow, high vertical lines will emphasize the narrowness.

"Designed to Sell" has taught me that for top resale value, people want to relate to what they see, so doing something unique can backfire unless it works really well with the unique scale of the space. That's years of watching hours and hours of HGTV every time I have a sick day!

I LOVE that celery-beige color--it's the perfect interesting neutral for resale.

I like the first one as well. I like the smaller scale.
I don't know if I am a fan of the "the whole wall" stuff. Seriously... what were they thinking in that second photo? Eek!

I like the first picture better and painted all the same color. The second picture reminds me of paneling - which I don't care for - and might become easily dated. That's my two cents. Now, how hard is it to install beadboard? I want to put some around the back of my kitchen islands. Is is a job a weekend warrior could do? And how would one go about trimming it out?

This is a toughie. I like both looks. I tend to pick the first one, but that may just be because of the hideous decorationsin the second. Now, on the subject of your long packed away craft supplies...you MUST dig them out NOW or BUY new ones this weekend and start a journal, or I will tazer you.

The first picture. Definitely. And I swear that it's not *just* because the second picture is...well, I just don't get it, let's say. I think that with the wainscoting there it actually makes the walls look shorter and you lose the "ooh ahh" factor of having wainscoting. And *especially* since it's for a flip...Go partway up. It'll make the ceilings look taller but the room seem grounded, and you'll get way good resale points. I like the idea of 3/4 height. But that's just my .02!

We agree with most of the bunch! The first photo heigth, or a bit taller will be more appealing to the average person. The second photo defines the awkward space in the vaulted wall, leaving many to wonder what they would do with that area.

A taller wainscotting that goes about 3/4 up the wall could look fabulous, especially with a ledge effect created by the top molding. Love the celery green color as well! just our first thoughts!

blessings,

I'm going to be a rebel here and say I like the all-the-way up look for that particular room. If you go with the first picture though, you'll save money on wainscoting (I'm so cheap).
